(Referees Cup 01/09/2018) Aberdeenshire RFC 12 – 42 Gordonian RFC 2XV

A humid, overcast Aberdeen day saw the first competitive game of the new 2018/19 season coming in the form of a Referees’ Cup tie against the 2nd XV Gordonians side from Countesswells. The boys in red and black were hoping to start the competitive campaign off with a bang at home against a team who they would also be meeting in the league competition. Unfortunately it was not to be for the Shire side who came up against a well trained, well drilled Gordonians pack.

The game kicked off with a high ball that marginally failed to go the full 10m, so play was brought back for a halfway line scrum with the put-in going to Gordonians. After a convincing scrummaging display from Gordonians (which continued for the remainder of the game) the ball was recycled and used well. Keeping the ball tight and using forward runners off 9 and 10 saw the phases mount up and the Shire defending a period of sustained pressure deep in their own half. The well drilled Gordonians play seemed to take the Shire side by surprise resulting in an un-characteristically disorganised defensive display for the Shire. Ultimately the pressure told as Gordonians ran in a try within the first 10 minutes.

However the shire dusted themselves off and following the restart the home side were able to apply a spell of pressure of their own, asking questions of the Gordonians defence with some strong running which ended with Aberdeenshire replying to the Gordonians try in kind with openside flanker, Kenny Penman, beating defenders in the tackle to go over for a great individual effort.

It wasn’t long however before the Gordonians were on the attack again, and again a lack of discipline, organisation and communication from Aberdeenshire allowed Gordonians to score another try. But Aberdeenshire dug deep and again applied the pressure on the Gordonians defence with a couple of penetrating runs and strong ball carries from the forwards ending in a ruck being formed 5m from home. Anticipating the glorious scenes of a debutant try, the Shire #12, Jamie Andrew, bravely picked up the ball from the back of the ruck and dived over the line touching the ball down and throwing his arms up in celebration… What a sensational moment that would have been if the line he dived over was the try line and not the 5m line.

The remainder of the game made for hard viewing for the home support seeing Gordonians running a further 5 try’s without reply from the home side. That is until the dying moments of the game where a last gasp effort from Shire ended in a try from full back Tom Watson, redeeming himself after the last weekend's debacle.

Final score: Aberdeenshire RFC 12 – 42 Gordonians 2XV

All in all a disappointing day with Aberdeenshire not performing anywhere near what they are capable of. Cracks will be smoothed over in training and we look forward to facing our next opposition with a trip up to Shetland.

MOTM – Kenny 'The Silver Fox' Penman

DOTD – Jamie '100 Caps for Shire' Andrew (delegated drinking responsibilities to Mark Littlejohn)
