Shire signs encouraging after brushing off pre-season match rust
As Saturday drew near it looked as though the lads would be going into the Caledonia Bowl fixture against Peterhead without a warm up game, as the planned opposition of RAF Lossiemouth for this weekend unfortunately had to pull out. Some cited fears of playing against the recently returned Big John 'Hendo' Henderson. Official story is that it was due to lack of available players. Thankfully Huntly had to pull out of their match against Fraserburgh for the same reason and our fixture Secretary, Tom Watson, quickly pounced to secure the fixture. With confirmation that Hendo was indeed working on Saturday, the stars aligned and the lads were off to the Broch for our first and only friendly before the start of the season.
As the game kicked off in the Fraserburgh sunshine, some hard running and aggression put the men from Woodside on the front foot and it wasn't long before the big number 8, Jason Burton, rumbled over the line for the first score of the day.
Indiscipline soon crept into Shires game with repeated penalties allowing Fraserburgh to build momentum and causing the men in red and black to relinquish possession repeatedly. However, the hard graft continued and further tries from the impressive elusive running of Gavin Cunningham and battering ram Kenny Penman, who ran round and through tackles in equal measure for 2 tries, ensured that Shire went into the break with a healthy lead.
After some "gentle encouragement" from Coach Barney the lads took to the field for the second half. With the discipline much improved and the game plan working smoothly, Shire picked up the pace, finding holes in the Fraserburgh defence whilst the forward pack showed their strength by dominating in the scrum. New signing Khalid showed his blistering pace to run in a fantastic try after a brilliant pass from Stand Off Jamie Stephen, who followed up shortly after by scoring his own blistering try. Soon after another Kenny Penman try was added.
Another strong period of Shire pressure resulted in prop Mark Littlejohn finding space at the side of the ruck thanks to a huge hand off, literally running over the top of the defence to make his way over the line. The Fraserburgh team had managed to keep their heads up and fought till the end before the dancing feet of centre Gavin Cunningham carved the home sides defence wide open yet again, leaving defenders standing flat footed to ghost past them and score the best try of the day.
Final score 5- 50 to the Shire.
It was certainly a tougher fixture than the final score suggests against a much improved Fraserburgh side and we would like to wish them the very best for the upcoming season!
MOTM went to Gav 'the Chav' Cunningham for being all but untouchable with the ball, and DOTD went to scrumhalf Nick 'No I Haven't Been On The Sunbeds, I'm Just This Colour Naturally' McBain - for forgetting nearly everything to do with rugby since his last game. Thanks to the ref for keeping him right, letting him know which side of the scrum to stand on etc...
We would also like to welcome Khalid, Shane and Ed who all made their first appearances for Aberdeenshire today whilst Ronan and Rob returned to the club after some time out from the game.
The future looks bright.
