A Memorable Day Out at Mackie

The Shire P4/5 team recorded their first tournament success when the came home triumphant with the Plate at the Mackie Tournament.

The tournament started off at well with our first match against Carnoustie. Although we lost 5 - 3, the lads put in a great performance, with the only real difference between the teams being a couple of breakaway tries to Carnoustie towards the end of the match.

In our next game we faced a strong Mackie side who ran out eventual winners with a score of 6 - 4. The lads, although beaten in their opening two games, took a bit of satisfaction for the fact they scored 7 tries. They were enjoying their games, and were now looking forward to the Plate competition.

Next up was Strathmore in the semi-final. This proved to be a nail-bighter of a game. It started late as someone had gone away with the ball! Shire started of well with a couple fo quick tries, only to be pegged back by a strong Strathmore side. Shire then edged in front again with another couple of tries, only for Strathmore to stage a comeback. The game was nearing the end, and it seemed as if the referee had lost his whistle!!! With the last piece of play in the game Strathmore edged a try in the corner, however Shire ran out narrow winners 4 - 3.

This set up a cracker of a final against Mackie. But was it going to be a game too far?? This led to one of the most nail-bighting finals of the day. Shire went into an early lead, only for Mackie to claw their way back to tie the scores at 3 - 3. Another couple of tries from Shire saw us move ahead 5 - 3. With only a few minutes left Mackie scored another to close the gap again to only one try. Our boys were determined not to lose this one and edged further in front only to see Mackie fight back with another. Shire finally ran out winners with a score of 7 - 5.

I couldn't pick out any player from the day; this was truly a team effort and they all played well. They all deserve a huge pat on the back!! This was the first competitive game for many of them and they played with a great team spirit throughout the day. Ben made his first appearance for the team but the way he got stuck in, no-one would have known. Hopefully he has caught the bug & we will see a lot more of him. Robert was playing in his first match and really got stuck in; the smile on his face said it all. Alix was also playing in his first match after only joining the club during the Winter months, and got stuck in with a few great try-saving tackles. Stephen was another who was playing in his first game, since only starting a few weeks ago. Kris played a stormer of a competition with great running, superb tackling and bagging a few tries along the way. It was great to see Dominick aka "Pockets" having a great competition, and scoring four tries! Mark played some great rugby, made great runs, great tackles, drove well and scored a few tries. Lastly, James was having a great day, and scored a good number of tries, and put in some great tackles.

You can be proud of you efforts, you all played with an great team spirit and played fair.

It was a great day. I'm sure that everyone who came along - the Mums, Dads, Grannies and Grandads, enjoyed the thrills and spills of it all!
