The Aberdeen Touch Rugby Leagues start next Wednesday evening at Woodside Sports Complex with the support of EDEN Springs. Over 40 teams comprising around 500 men and women will take part in the Leagues and Cup competition for 10 weeks from April 25th until June 27th. It is one of the largest spring and summer mixed sports leagues in the UK. The tournament is divided into expert, intermediate and novice leagues and offers an excellent opportunity for company team building. This is clearly reflected by the number of locally based companies who have entered teams in 2007 including Marathon, RGB, Saipem-Sonsub, BP, Shell, Scottish Enterprise Grampian, David Llyod Leisure and SAIC…to name but a few.
The tournament this year benefits from a record amount of newly qualified referees who were put through rigorous practical and theory based exams before successfully completing their courses at the Spring 1 day tournament last weekend.
Delighted with the increase in referee numbers, Graeme Buchan, Tournament Director, reported that:
“This was excellent news for the development of the game in Aberdeen, and a credit to the good work that referee Tournament Umpire Sarah Holt and coordinator Beth Smith have put in recently. Sarah is the highest ranking female Touch referee in Scotland and we are very happy that she has relocated in Aberdeen.”
Wendy Bendel, Eden Springs Key Account Manager commented,
“We are delighted to be involved with such a positive and worthwhile event, participation in exercise leading to improved health and self improvement while having fun fits well with our company values”

The sunny weather made the first tournament of the year a cracker !
We managed to qualify over 20 referees and 2 Aberdeen teams took some silverware, well done to Surf Rescue, Aberdeenshire Leopards and everyone else that took part no matter where you ended up placed.
A BIG thank you to all the people who helped with the dozens of tasks that need to be done to run the tournament smoothly. Those that come to mind are: (apologies if I have missed anyone)
Iain for preparing the pitches
Linda for cleaning the BBQ
Ray and Ken's son for getting some water from Tescos
Steve, Louis and Baz for running the bar all day - well done lads.
Andy for the Chilli - (Square One) - delicious.
Shona for doing the shopping, cooking the burgers for 6 hours with a hangover and not stabbing me when I said she wasn't cooking them quick enough !
Beth and Sarah for coordination of the referees - under pressure all day from the Top brass from Edinburgh.
Richard (from Weatherford) for keeping score and timing the games.
Ken (from Schlumberger) for correcting Richards scoring (only 1 error)
Dave for checking my checking
Lochie & Lorraine for taking photos during the day
Will for arranging his work schedule to be at the tournament as a L2 referee from Malaysia !
All the travelling teams.
Dawn and everyone that helped tidy up at the end.
Now.... I just need someone to clean that chilli pot !
With everyone helping this made it one the most pleasurable tournaments to be part of yet. We also raised £65 in the raffle towards our Touch Development fund. Roll on the leagues ! We have 39 teams registered at the moment, but still have room 9 more teams. Lastly Congratulations to Wallace who has become our 4th Level 2 Referee from Aberdeen...Well done.
