Aberdeenshire RFC Centenary

Message from Gordon Masson
President Scottish Rugby Union 1991/92.

Most rugby clubs celebrate only one Centenary. Not so Aberdeenshire who, having already in 1975 marked the one hundred years of their existence, now commemorate their one hundred years as members of the Scottish Rugby Union.

Look out though because you may be toasting your third Centenary next year! I see from the SRU Minutes that your predecessors, the Aberdeen Thistle Club were admitted to SRU membership in 1892 but in the following year 1893. "Aberdeen Thistle were granted permission to change their name to Aberdeenhshire". Sounds like an excuse for another party! But so what, isn't good fun, friendship and fellowship an integral part of the game of rugby football?

During my term as President of the Union I was privileged to visit many countries, Romania, New Zealand and Australia to name but a few, as well as being heavily involved in that great success for the spreading of the rugby gospel, the World Cup. One duty which gave me as much pleasure as any of the others was to be invited to open your new clubhouse at Woodside. Having personally suffered the trials and tribulations of the Chanonry (choice of bath - home. Uptown Baths or River Don) and having sympathised with the problems of your nomadic existence over so many years, it was heartening to see your Club at last installed in its own playing and social headquarters.

The Club is now well set for the next hundred years and I am particularly appreciative of your efforts in bringing on the youngsters through your excellent youth policy over the years. This can do nothing but good for the Club and for rugby in the North-east.

Although now I am a past President, I know that I can safely speak for the present President and the whole of his Committee in congratulating a grand, friendly, sociable, go-ahead club on achieving one hundred years continuous membership of the Scottish Rugby Union.
