In the final of 1934-35, on the way to which Aberdeen Wanderers were defeated 47-3, Aberdeen University 6-3 and Highland 14-0, Kirkcaldy were again beaten in the final at Newlands, Perth on 29th March, 1935. In the 1935-36 final at Rubislaw, 'Shire beat Madras College F.Ps., by 1 placed goal, 1 penalty goal and 1 try (11 points) to nil. Team:- J.G. Bamett; A.J. Cooper, J.G.H. Napier (Capt). J.M. Wildgoose, J.F. Shackleton; R.J.L. Gallic and S. Cameron, A.E. Watt, O.S. Tait, J. Allan, J.G.H. Edwards, J. Nelson, G.A. Langham, G.F. Raebum and A. MacDonald. During that decade George Stroud, Andy Cooper, Peter Davidson, George Paterson, H.R. Orr, C.H.C. Brown, J.F. Shackleton, J.G.H. Napier, G.H. Dunn and H.R. Craig were honoured by representing the North against The Midlands and the South. George Stroud was also in the representative North of Scotland side which took on the Springboks at Pittodrie in 1932 and the All Blacks in 1935. The New Zealand back positions are interesting as being one player at Full Back, three at Three-quarters, two at Five- eights and one at Half-back. |

Not a few, happily, of those former stalwarts are still with us and continue their association with the club. More than one has said the new rules and amendments of the past decade have contributed much to their enjoyment as spectators at the expense of demanding more physical effort from the players than was asked for in their day. The game is much more fluid and open. Handling is now almost as much a prerogative of the forwards as of the backs. The disruptive and destructive play of wing forwards is an unhappy memory, relegated to the play of the past. Happily. too, tactics in favour of defence as closing up a game by hugging the side lines are much more difficult to apply. Such serves to show the game is alive and breathing mightly under the auspices of its adminstrators, who have ever striven to conserve what is the good and eliminate what has proved to be the bad in the directions into which the game has found itself turning. The line-out could well be under current scrutiny. |

These years of the 1930's were certainly halcyon times for Aberdeenshire. In dire contrast, in 1926-27 the club did not take the field once and at the Annual General Meeting in the Douglas Hotel on the 2nd May, 1929 it was successfully proposed by M. Bruce Watson and seconded by W. Wallace Porter that "the Club should fall into the Junior League next season. "The move was entirely justified when 'Shire, with David Smith as captain and Wallace Porter as vice, became Junior League Champions in season 1929-30 and thereafter went on to the later successes of the 30's. Then too the Club fathered and ran a 'Shire Wednesday XV with players drawn from University and former pupils, unattached to any city school, who had a mid week half-day. |
|
As well 'Shire, especially with the help of Peter Davidson, Honorary President and Captain '34-'35, '35-'36, '36-'37 was responsible for bringing to Aberdeen and entertaining an Edinburgh XV sponsored by G. W. Mackie of Edinburgh Wanderers, to play against an Aberdeen City Select. The majority of the players were from the Wanderers Club but there were others from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, London Scottish, West of Scotland and Royal High School F.Ps., - appropriately they took the field in red and black. A combined 'Shire and Aberdeen Wanderers XV also took on Heriots F.Ps., 1st XV and 'Shire arranged and played several annual games with a West of Scotland touring side. |
