Aberdeenshire RFC Centenary

North League and Cup

'Shire's Playing record for 1894-95 was:-

Games played 12 Won 8 Lost 3 Drawn 1

Points for 92 Points against 22

It would be pleasant to reflect that the record for the following season, with 'Shire garbed in its original strip and so in theory appearing mightily huge, was even better. Unfortunately no figures are to hand. Almost a decade later however, for season 1907-08 results were:-

Games played 15 Won 10 Lost 2 Drawn 3

Points for 120 Points against 30

In the North of Scotland Local League, during the same season, which 'Shire topped results were:-

Games Played 9 Won 7 Lost 0 Drawn 2

Points for 66 Points against 11

NL:- North of Scotland League Game.

C:- Knock out Cup Tie.

The fixture list indicates the season was somewhat shorter - a later start and an earlier end, the latter to accomodate ties, on a knock out basis to decide the team to represent the North in the game for the North and Midlands Cup.

The start of the season was heralded by a practice game on the 1st Saturday of October. This no doubt developed into a doughty tussle between contending rivals for 1st XV places as at a meeting held in the Queen's Rooms on 12th September, 1895, the following resolution was passed - "That the secretary be instructed to inform the players by letter that the selection for the 1st XV would depend on their form in the practice game."

The weather, then as now, caused fixtures to be cancelled. In the succeeding season 1908-09 on 12th December the game v H.M.S. "Ringdore" at Duthie Park was off - ground unplayable, on January 2nd v Queen's Cross at Summerhill off - snow, on 30th January v University (League) at King's College off - frost, on February 6th v Grammar School F.Ps., at Mannofield off - frost and on March 6th v University (Cup Tie) at King's off - frost. These frost prone months are as would be expected today.

Aberdeenshire Rugby Football Club 1st XV. Season 1912-1913

The league fixtures are of special interest with the recent introduction of the present divisions on a national and not as then on a local basis. Later in season 1923-24 the league is still in existence but Nomads and Queen's Cross alas are no more! 'Shire on the other hand continued their good performance of former years but for that against their old rivals F. Ps.,-no doubt due to an open club's want of match experience at the season's start.

Besides the rivalry engendered and kept alive by the local league games, a knock out competition was held, as already mentioned, towards the end of the season among the city clubs to decide who should represent the North in the match for the North and Midlands Cup .

In season 1908-09 'Shire fared in the ties and final as follows:-

At a North District Rugby Union Meeting in 1933 'Shire's representives Messrs. G. D. W. Stroud and W. W. Porter voted against a proposal for the reorganisation of the Cup rules. This was to organise a league to settle who should go forward to represent the North in the cup game. 'Shire's view that this was no improvement over the existing system of a knock out competition won approval.

'Shire won this cup contested for between the champions of the North and the champions of the Midlands in seasons 1893-94, 1895-96, 1896-97, 1931-32, 1934-35, 1935-36 in all six times. Only Panmure eleven times and A.G.S.F.Ps., eight times have won it oftener. The competition has not been revived since the 1939-45 war and the Cup itself lies in the coffers of Panmure, who last won it. 'Shire's success in the '90's inspired the club to communicate in September, 1895, with the secretary of the Northern Counties Football Union, the predecessor of the North District Rugby Union, proposing that there should be a '"Shire v Rest of Town" match at Holbum and again in September 1899, proposing a championship among the local clubs.

There is unfortunately no record of how the Club fared if indeed the proposals were accepted. From 1906-1909 a 'Shire member W.G. Falconer represented the North and Midlands District on the Scottish Football Union - now the Scottish Rugby Union.
